PRE or Lusitano? Which Iberian Horse is Right for You?

Both the PRE and the Lusitano are Iberian breeds with a rich history. But there are also important differences. Which breed suits you best as a rider?

Iberisch paard dressuur

When looking for an Iberian horse, you will quickly encounter two breeds: the PRE (Pura Raza Española) and the Lusitano. Both share ancient roots but were officially separated in the twentieth century — the PRE under Spain's ANCCE, the Lusitano under Portugal's APSL.

Key differences

The PRE tends to be more sensitive and cooperative — intelligent, responding well to subtle aids. The Lusitano has more fire, originally bred for bullfighting, making it outstanding for high-level piaffe and passage but requiring more experience.

The NL Stables choice

At NL Stables we specialise in the PRE because we believe it is the best match for most riders — from leisure to Grand Prix. The character is more accessible, the gaits are generous and the connection with the rider is unmatched. Contact us for a personal conversation, or browse our PRE horses for sale.
